Cooling Systems

Our  Data centre cooling solution is based on Liebert Hiross HPAC (Precision air conditioner) units. These are designed to cool electronic equipment and computers critical to the revenue earning capability of our customers. As such, reliable, un-interrupted operation is expected over the entire life span of the HPAC units. Both temperature and humidity is controlled to the tolerances. Electronic equipment does not generate moisture and fresh air intake of equipment rooms is normally reduced to a minimum. HPAC units are, therefore, designed for high sensible loads, with the resultant high airflow also being beneficial to the proper ventilation of the electronic equipment and the elimination of hot spots in the room.

This cooling system is different from Comfort cooling systems meant for cooling houses and offices inhabited by people. They are designed to handle a high latent heat load; remove the moisture introduced by humans and fresh air. As such, the airflow is low in relation to the cooling capacity.

When data centre/room is not cooled correctly the following problems could arise:

  • Hot spots in the equipment room causing system failures
  • Insufficient airflow to ventilate all equipment, leading to further failures.
  • Aircon coils freezing up
  • Room temperature never as required.
  • Humidity level out of control.
  • Dust clogging up airways causing equipment failures.
  • Dust settling on equipment PC boards leading to failures.
  • Condensation against the walls and on the equipment causing corrosion and malfunction of equipment.
  • Static discharges causing computers to hang.
  • Cooling plant requiring more power than the equipment being cooled.
  • Cooling plant maintenance being disruptive to equipment operation, made worse by spillage of water and dirt.
  • Equipment frequent damages due to failures blamed on improper environmental control
